The History of Oakwood Country Club

“It was the social tool for Jewish folks, and while we couldn’t go anywhere else because they would not have us, being a member of Oakwood was like a coat of arms.”

— Elaine Sight

Founded in 1881, Oakwood Country Club holds a unique place in American history as one of only two clubs in the United States founded as Jewish clubs and later listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This distinction reflects Oakwood’s cultural significance and the enduring importance of preserving its legacy.

For decades, Oakwood served as a sanctuary for a community facing exclusion from many social and business institutions. Its history is inseparable from broader themes of perseverance, inclusion, and progress — values that continue to guide preservation efforts today.

As Kansas City expanded and recreational trends evolved, Oakwood adapted while remaining rooted in its original mission. In 1911, the Club secured its current location, transforming the historic W.A. Rule Farm into a permanent home. Over the decades, Oakwood’s buildings and grounds have reflected both continuity and change — a balance that requires thoughtful stewardship.

The Putting Cottage, Performance Center, Driving Range, and Pond reflect ongoing care for the historic property and grounds.

The 1881 Foundation, Inc. was established as an independent 501(c)(3) public charity to support the long-term preservation, restoration, and interpretation of Oakwood’s historic clubhouse and grounds. Foundation activities are restricted to qualifying historic preservation and educational purposes consistent with its charitable mission.

Preserving historic structures requires long-term planning, sustained investment, and careful decision-making. The Foundation’s role is to help ensure that Oakwood’s historically significant features are protected and maintained in a manner that respects their architectural and cultural importance.

Through responsible stewardship and donor support, the 1881 Foundation helps safeguard Oakwood’s legacy so it can continue to educate, inspire, and serve future generations.
