Why Is a Charitable Foundation Essential to Oakwood?

“Allow me to start this letter about Oakwood by suggesting that I may have been a member for longer than any other living member. This year (2022) I celebrated 99 years of membership. Joan Meinrath and I were married there. It was a beautiful, joyful wedding. Oakwood was the perfect venue.”

— Bert Berkley

Preserving historic places requires thoughtful planning, specialized expertise, and sustainable financial support. The responsibility of caring for Oakwood’s historic clubhouse and grounds extends well beyond initial restoration projects — it demands long-term stewardship to ensure these resources remain protected for future generations.

The 1881 Foundation exists to support preservation priorities that protect Oakwood’s historic fabric, address ongoing repair and maintenance needs, and help interpret the Club’s legacy through educational activities consistent with the Foundation’s charitable mission.

In recent years, important restoration and repair needs have been identified and addressed. The Foundation’s focus is long-term stewardship — supporting preservation priorities that responsibly care for Oakwood’s historic resources and ensure their continued integrity over time.

Through donor support, the 1881 Foundation helps protect a treasured piece of Kansas City history and ensures Oakwood’s story can be shared with future generations.
